Has successfully implemented new policies and approaches to public safety that sharply reduced violent crime and burglary rates. This included the implementation of the VIPER unit which helped to reduce crime.
Has been honored by numerous Democratic clubs and organizations for his progressive leadership and strong support of the Democratic Party. In 2013 he was recognized as Democrat of the Year by the Broward Democratic Party.
Eliminated discriminatory hiring practices of the past and recruited and invited historically underrepresented communities to seek business opportunities and jobs with BSO. Vastly increased the number of minorities and women in sworn positions and throughout the agency so that the Broward Sheriff's Office looked more like the community it serves. Focused on building stronger partnerships with all communities.
Making A Difference For Our Youth
As law enforcement officers, our worth should be measured by the children we keep mentor, coach and interact with to keep them out of jail, not by how many we arrest. Helped our youth by expanding the juvenile civil citation program, with only 5% of juveniles in the program returning to crime.
Sensible Gun Safety
He vocally opposed the NRA’s extremist agenda. He actively campaigned for gun safety including opposing open carry on college campuses, supporting a uniform national background check and opposing stand your ground laws.
Supported equipping all uniformed deputies with body cameras to ensure greater transparency and accountability to the public while also improving deputy safety.
More Than Just A Law Enforcement Agency
Expanded social service programs to help the homeless and mentally ill get the help they need. Under Sheriff Israel's leadership BSO's Homeless Outreach Program received a prestigious civil rights award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
